Founded in 1977 by Wayne Hong the Rice Bowl has had a long history with the Avalon Mall. The Rice Bowl is and continues to be the only non-franchised restaurant in the food court. It is a family owned and operated business which was run by Wayne and his wife Shirley up until Wayne’s passing in 2005. After that, Shirley continued his legacy until she retired in 2017 with their daughter Sandi now at the helm.
With 40+ years of business it is safe to say that the Rice Bowl has seen many changes over the years. Numerous renovations and location changes as the Avalon Mall grew and expanded as it continues to do so today. Through all these changes the Rice Bowl continued to serve the food favourites that the people of St. John’s repetitively asked for and became the standards that the business was built on.
The Rice Bowl has won numerous awards over the years and received many accolades due to their longevity and will continue to do so with new additions to the menu to satisfy the more adventurous pallets of the public. Reaching farther into the public today through the use of social media such as Facebook and Google is a step the Rice Bowl has taken to engage the public and listen to their requests and comments. These measures will allow us to provide the best possible product for our customers. Rice Bowl’s hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 11:30 am to 8:30 pm and Sundays 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. We can be reached at 709-753-1653 during these hours.
